We want to surf the remote Okanda point break south of Arugam Bay. Is it culturally acceptable to walk from the beach directly into the famous Okanda Hindu temple in our boardshorts.

Absolutely not. The Okanda Murugan Temple is an immensely sacred pilgrimage site. You must dry off, put on a shirt, and men must wear a sarong or long pants (and often remove their shirt inside the main shrine depending on the priest). Women must have shoulders and knees fully covered. Treat the temple with the utmost respect.

Just keep a dry sarong and a t-shirt in your tuk-tuk. You can easily change by the beach before walking up to the temple gates.

The surf at Okanda is amazing, but watch out for wild boars on the beach. They wander down from Kumana National Park.
