Visiting Agrabodhi Viharaya after a surf session in Weligama
3 Answers from travellers
The Agrabodhi Viharaya is a highly significant ancient temple, believed to be the first place the sacred Bodhi sapling was planted before being moved. It is just a short walk inland from the main surf break. However, you absolutely cannot visit in surfwear. You must wear clothes covering your shoulders and knees, and remove any hats.
If you go in the evening around 6 PM, the chanting starts and it is a beautiful contrast to the loud beach bars down on the coast.
I usually just keep a lightweight sarong and a t shirt in my dry bag on the beach. After my morning surf, I wrap the sarong over my boardshorts before walking up to the temple.
