I am traveling in August. Should I do whale watching in Mirissa on the south coast or Trincomalee on the east coast for the best chance of seeing Blue Whales.

In August, you MUST go to Trincomalee. The monsoon seasons dictate the whale migrations. In August, the ocean in Mirissa is rough, dangerous, and the whales have moved away. Trincomalee on the east coast will have calm waters, and August is peak season for spotting Blue Whales and Sperm Whales off Swami Rock.

Do not even attempt the south coast ocean in August. Most reputable tour boats in Mirissa pull their boats out of the water for maintenance during that time anyway.

If you go to Trinco, check out Pigeon Island for snorkeling after your whale tour!
