When we got off the train in Ahangama, the tuk tuk drivers demanded 1500 rupees to take us to a hostel that was only 5 minutes away. Is this normal.

It is the classic station mafia scam. The drivers parked directly at the station exit collude to overcharge tourists getting off the train. Walk 50 meters out to the main Galle road and flag down a passing tuk-tuk. A 5-minute ride should cost no more than 300 to 400 LKR.

I literally just walked. Ahangama is so small that almost everything is within a 15-minute walk from the station.

If you have heavy surfboards, ask your hostel to send their own driver. It is usually much cheaper and hassle-free.

Next time, just use the PickMe app to show them the fair rate. They usually drop the price if they see you know the actual cost.

We ended up walking, but dragging board bags in the midday heat was brutal.
