Why do none of the tuk tuks waiting around Kandy Lake accept PickMe rides. When I order one on the app, they just stare at me and reject it.

Kandy has a very strong informal tuk-tuk union that fiercely opposes rideshare apps because the apps enforce fair, metered pricing. Drivers parked at prime tourist spots (like the lake or Temple of the Tooth) rely on heavily inflated, negotiated fares. They will purposely ignore app requests. Walk 5-10 minutes away from the main tourist hubs, and local drivers will gladly accept your PickMe request.

I had a driver accept my ride, drive to me, and then demand double the app price in cash anyway. Very frustrating.

Just ask your hotel reception what the standard local rate is to your destination. Then negotiate directly with confidence.
