100% a scam. It is a 10-minute drive from Pottuvil to Arugam Bay and local buses run that road frequently. The tuk-tuk drivers in Pottuvil know tourists are tired after the long cross-country trip and try to extort high fares (often 1500+ LKR) for a very short ride. Just walk to the bus stand or negotiate a tuk-tuk down to 300-400 LKR.

If you have heavy surfboards, the bus might refuse you, so a tuktuk is your only option. But negotiate hard.

The bus costs like 40 rupees, it is insanely cheap.

We only have backpacks. We will just wait for the local bus.

Good call. Just walk a bit down the road and flag down a passing red CTB bus.

We fell for this and paid 2000 rupees. Do not trust the guys waiting right where the Colombo bus drops you off.
