Vesak full moon 2026 falls when alcohol totally banned
I am flying in next week and saw Vesak Poya 2026 mentioned multiple times Am I right that the full moon Poya day in May or June is the strictest one Will my Galle hotel still serve cocktails at the rooftop bar Are duty free shops at CMB also closed on Poya I want to plan a long lunch with wine without disrespecting the day

Vesak is the most sacred Poya commemorating birth enlightenment and death of the Buddha For 2026 it falls on 1 June All liquor stores and public bars are closed by law from midnight before Poya to 6 AM following morning Hotels licensed as resorts (most 4 and 5 star) cannot serve in public bars but room service or in room minibar is allowed Some heritage hotels in Galle quietly serve in suites Duty free at CMB remains open it is a separate license Plan your wine lunch for the day after Vesak (2 June) or the day before
Note every monthly Poya has lighter restrictions liquor shops always close but daily food is normal Just plan around the full moon dates
Stock up the day before The day after Vesak the queues at liquor stores are surprisingly civilised
Meat is also restricted in public restaurants on Vesak though tourist places usually serve vegetarian Poya menus are often the most creative cooking of the year
Embrace the day instead Gangaramaya temple in Colombo runs a stunning lantern procession until midnight Streets are lit with bamboo lanterns Free food (dansal) stalls everywhere amazing kiribath and string hoppers no charge
