Is there any partying during the Vesak festival in Colombo or is it purely a religious culture event

Vesak is very peaceful but alcohol sales are strictly banned for the weekend. The party vibe is in the streets with lanterns and food stalls called Dansal.

The illuminated lanterns over Beira Lake are stunning and it feels like a giant street festival.

Most beach bars down south close for a few days during Vesak out of respect.
