While it is not legally mandatory for tourists, wearing white during Vesak is highly recommended. It is a sign of immense respect, purity, and mourning for the Buddha. During this holy weekend, you will see 99% of locals dressed entirely in white. If you wear brightly colored tourist clothes, you will stand out and might be denied entry to the inner shrines.

I bought a simple white linen shirt in Pettah for 1000 rupees. Made the temple visit much smoother.

Very light, modest colors are generally accepted if you do not have white.

Make sure your shoulders and knees are fully covered as well, regardless of the color.
