Ceylon tea is classified by elevation into three main categories. High grown tea from areas above twelve hundred meters like Nuwara Eliya and Dimbula has a bright delicate flavor and golden color. Mid grown tea from Kandy region offers a balanced rich taste perfect for everyday drinking. Low grown tea from Ruhuna and Sabaragamuwa has a strong bold flavor preferred by Middle Eastern markets. For souvenirs the high grown silver tips and golden tips white teas make the most luxurious gifts.

Look for the famous Lion logo on tea packaging which guarantees the tea is one hundred percent pure Ceylon tea grown and packed in Sri Lanka. Brands like Dilmah, Mlesna, Basilur, and Zesta offer beautiful gift boxes at airport duty free and city tea boutiques. Avoid generic tea bags from supermarkets as the quality is significantly lower than loose leaf premium grades.
