For 2026, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls on April 14. The auspicious times are calculated annually by astrologers. Usually, there is a neutral period called Nonagathaya where you should visit the temple. Lighting the hearth and the first meal happen at specific minutes. Your host family will have the local calendar printed in the newspapers. It is a beautiful time to see everyone dressed in the years designated lucky color.
