When do the Vesak lanterns go up in Colombo for 2026?

You will see the preparations starting at least a week in advance. The massive thoranas or pandals are being built right now in areas like Pettah and Borella. Most lanterns are lit up starting the evening of April 30. If you are here on the night of May 1, the city will be in full glow. Be prepared for major traffic diversions in central Colombo as millions of people come out to see the lights.
