The transition from the South to the East coast is currently underway. While Mirissa officially wraps up by the end of April, boats in Trincomalee are already seeing early sightings. The official season starts in May, but visibility is already excellent. If you are here now, you have a good chance of seeing Blue Whales and sperm whales without the heavy crowds of the peak season.

Just be aware that sea conditions in the east are quite different from the south. The swell is lower right now, which is perfect for photography.
