When is the main Vesak lantern festival in Colombo for 2026?
Calendars show May 1 as Vesak Poya but I heard the state festival is different. Which weekend should I visit for the light displays.

The official State Vesak Festival for 2026 will be celebrated on May 30. While May 1 is a Full Moon Poya Day, the large scale lantern competitions and street pandals in Colombo will be focused on the May 30 weekend. This is an important distinction if you want to see the massive light structures. Because May 1 is also May Day, expect Colombo to be very busy with public rallies during the day.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
