The official State Vesak Festival for 2026 will be celebrated on May 30. While May 1 is a Poya day, the religious and astrological alignment for the Buddha Birth and Enlightenment celebrations has been officially set for the end of May. This is when the largest thoranas and lantern competitions in Colombo will be active. It is a massive week long celebration of light and charity.
Expected traffic in Colombo will be heavy. If you are here for the earlier May 1 holiday, many temples will still have religious programs, but for the light displays, the May 30 weekend is the one to target.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
