I want to see the lanterns in Colombo. Does the holiday fall on May 1 this year and are there any special events.

Vesak Full Moon Poya Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. This year it coincides with International Labour Day. Most major light displays and thoranas in Colombo will be active from May 1 through the weekend. Please note that because of the May Day rallies, central Colombo will be very crowded in the morning. For the best experience, visit the lantern zones near Beira Lake after sunset.
