Where can I see the biggest Vesak lanterns in Colombo this year?

Vesak falls on May 1, 2026. You will see the massive thoranas or pandals being constructed in areas like Pettah, Borella, and near the Gangarama Temple at least a week before. The lanterns are usually lit on the eve of the Poya day. The Beira Lake area is the most iconic spot where hundreds of floating lanterns create a sea of light. I recommend walking the Bauddhaloka Mawatha stretch for the best lantern competition displays.
The charity food stalls called dansalas will also be active during that week. Look for the long queues for free ice cream or chickpea snacks as it is a major part of the festive spirit and community merit making.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
