Online calendars show May 1 and May 30 for Vesak. I want to see the big lanterns in Colombo. Which date should I plan my visit for.

The government has officially designated May 30, 2026, as the State Vesak Festival. While May 1 is a Poya day, the religious and astrological alignment for the Enlightenment celebrations is set for the end of May. This is when you will find the most spectacular light displays, thoranas, and community food stalls in Colombo and Kandy.
