Why are the murals at Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara so unique?
I am visiting Colombo and want to see the Kelaniya temple. How do the paintings there differ from the ancient ones in Sigiriya or Dambulla.

The murals at Kelaniya are extraordinary because they represent a 20th century revival of traditional art led by the famous artist Solias Mendis. Unlike the 2D style of Sigiriya, Mendis used a technique that created depth and realism while still respecting classical themes. The paintings depict the arrival of the Tooth Relic and various visits of the Buddha to the island. The use of natural earth pigments gives the walls a unique warmth that is very different from the vibrant modern paints used in other contemporary temples.
Try to visit during a full moon poya day. The temple becomes a sea of white clad devotees and the atmosphere makes viewing the art a much more spiritual and immersive experience. The temple is only about ten kilometers from central Colombo.
