Driver in Hatton says we can still do Sri Pada if we get a paper from the Nallathanniya Wildlife office. Every blog says off-season is closed, lights off, leeches, no tea shops. Daily Mirror in July said only two routes and a mandatory pass. Is that a real climb this week or a wet staircase to a locked temple.

You can go if Wildlife issues the pass at Nallathanniya or Palabaddala. That is not the same as the season. Lights are off, stalls are shut, the summit shrine is not running the pilgrimage programme, and August cloud eats the sunrise. Leeches after rain are normal. If you want the night-stairs-and-dawn postcard, wait until December. If you want a wet, empty, serious hike with a headtorch and no safety net, that is the pass.
We asked at Nallathanniya Tuesday and turned around. Guesthouses half-closed, rain sideways. Not worth a 5,500-step night with no tea.
No polythene, no freelance side-path. Entering a closed route is an offence under the wildlife ordinance. Do not follow a tuk-tuk shortcut.
