Vesak Poya falls on Friday May 1 this year which is also International Workers Day. Should I expect protests or crowds.

The overlap is rare and will make Colombo exceptionally busy. Most May Day rallies are typically held in the morning and early afternoon, while Vesak lantern displays and pandals come alive after dark. There is a strong police presence planned for the weekend of May 1 and 2 to manage the transition. I suggest avoiding the Galle Face area during the day and focusing on the Beira Lake displays in the evening.

Expect major road closures around Pettah and Borella. Many people use the May Day holiday as a chance to start their Vesak pilgrimage early, so public transport like trains to Kandy will be fully booked.
