A-Bay shop will rent me a 125 with just my UK photocard - is that legal in 2026 or a roadside fine machine

No IDP. No airport permit. Guy in the surf shop said police do not care in Pottuvil and insurance is "included". I have been riding 10 years at home. Galle shops said the same last week.

Your UK card alone is not a Sri Lankan licence. An IDP alone is not enough either. You need a recognition / temporary permit (AAC covering permit, or the DMT counter at CMB for motorbike/car - not for tuk-tuks). Shops that rent without it are common. The risk is yours: fine, bike seized, travel insurance dead if you crash. "Police do not care in Pottuvil" is not a statute.

I rode three days, never stopped. Friend in Galle got a checkpoint and paid. Lottery.

If you already landed, some rental companies will still run the AAC paperwork. Do that before you take the key. Two helmets.

Not taking the key without the paper. Two helmets.
