Posting because off season climbers keep asking me Sri Pada Adams Peak has its lit pilgrimage season roughly December to May with the steps illuminated and the crowds and the dawn summit ritual In June the season is over What does climbing it off season actually involve are the steps lit is the summit temple open is the path safe and is the famous sunrise and the shadow of the peak still the reward without the pilgrim atmosphere Honest mountain advice for the quiet season

I climb it every season so the off season honest picture What changes after the season the lights along the path are switched OFF the season is when the staircase is illuminated for the night pilgrim climb off season you climb in the dark with your own headtorch the tea shops lining the route that sustain pilgrims with the night are mostly closed or sparse the summit temple may have limited or no active ceremony and crucially fewer people means less of the human chain that makes the season climb feel communal and safe The path safety off season the steps themselves are there and climbable but June is southwest monsoon which is the real off season issue rain mist and slick steps cloud often smothers the summit at dawn killing the view leeches appear in the lower forest sections and the descent on wet stone demands care a clear June dawn happens but you are gambling against the monsoon far more than in the dry pilgrimage months Is the reward still there when June grants a clear morning yes the sunrise and the extraordinary triangular shadow the peak casts across the cloud sea remain among the islands great sights and you may have the summit nearly alone which has its own profound quality but the odds of the clear dawn are simply lower this month and the magic of the lit pilgrim trail and the crowds of white clad devotees is absent that atmosphere IS the season experience Honest advice for June go in with a headtorch warm and waterproof layers and managed expectations start the night climb around midnight to one for the dawn check the weather and be willing to abort if it is socked in and treat a clear summit as a gift not a guarantee if the lit pilgrim atmosphere and reliable dawn are what you want this is a return in the December to May season not a June climb but a quiet clear off season summit is a special solitude if the weather cooperates

Climbed off season last year in clear weather and had the shadow of the peak almost to ourselves the solitude was extraordinary but two friends the week before saw only cloud the gamble is real

One safety addition off season do not climb alone tell your guesthouse your plan and timing the closed tea shops mean no one along the way if something goes wrong the season chain of people is itself a safety net that is absent now
