The vast majority of the beach dogs in Unawatuna are incredibly lazy heavily accustomed to tourists and completely harmless. They mostly just want to sleep quietly in the shade near your sunbed.

However to remain entirely safe you absolutely should not try to aggressively pet them or wake them up suddenly. Local animal charities actively vaccinate many of them but treating them with respectful distance is always the smartest choice.
