I am planning to visit Trincomalee in May. Can I really see sharks in the shallow water and is there any danger for beginner swimmers.

Yes, seeing blacktip reef sharks is a highlight of Pigeon Island. They are generally very shy and completely harmless to humans as long as you do not try to touch or chase them. The water is quite shallow near the beach area, making it ideal for beginners. However, please wear a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer, as the current can sometimes pick up near the reef edge. May is the start of the prime season with excellent visibility.

Make sure to arrive by 8:00 AM to beat the crowds. By noon, the number of boats can make the water a bit murky and the sharks tend to move to deeper areas to avoid the noise.
