The Wewurukannala Viharaya in Dikwella is an incredible cultural site. It features a towering, massive seated Buddha statue that you can actually climb inside to reach the top for panoramic views of the coast.
If you rent a scooter, you can also explore the Mulkirigala Rock Temple nearby. It is a stunning ancient monastery built directly into a massive rock face, similar to Dambulla but with zero tourist crowds.
To reach the top of the statue, you have to walk through a fascinating but slightly eerie tunnel depicting vivid murals of Buddhist hell, which is a very unique cultural experience.
