I love adventure and heard there are limestone caves in the mountains. Are they accessible for intermediate hikers and do I need specialized equipment.

The Nitro Cave is the most famous one in the Knuckles range. It is a large cavern home to thousands of bats. The trek there is quite steep and requires a good level of fitness. You do not need professional climbing gear but a powerful headlamp and shoes with excellent grip are mandatory because the floor is covered in guano and very slippery. Always go with a local guide who knows the weather patterns as these areas are prone to flash mists.

Be mindful that some caves in the region are considered sacred or have historical significance as ancient meditation sites for monks. Always check with your guide about the cultural status of a cave before entering.
