The trail to the base of Bambarakanda is obvious, but hiking to the UPPER tiers (Lanka Ella) through the pine forests and tea estates is dangerous without a guide. The trails are unmarked, the pine needles make the ground slippery as ice, and sudden mist can completely disorient you. Hire a local village tracker for a few thousand rupees. It ensures your safety and supports the local economy.

We got lost for two hours trying to find Lanka Ella alone. The tea estates all look identical. Get a guide.

I will definitely ask my guesthouse to arrange a tracker. Thank you.

Also, do not stand near the cliff edge at the upper falls. Sudden wind drafts can pull you over.
