While wild elephants are rare right inside Bandarawela town, you can frequently spot them if you drive towards the lower plains near Wellawaya and the Udawalawe borders.

If you specifically want a guaranteed wildlife experience, taking a short day trip down the mountain to Udawalawe National Park is your absolute best option.

It is very common to see wild elephants standing right next to the electric fences along the main highway near the Udawalawe reservoir, hoping tourists will toss them fruit.
