We are in Arugam Bay and noticed many surf shops and restaurants closed on Friday afternoon. Is this due to the local mosque prayers, and should we avoid surfing during this time.

Arugam Bay has a vibrant, predominantly Muslim local community. Yes, on Friday afternoons between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, many local businesses close for Jummah prayers. You are perfectly fine to continue surfing during this time, but expect the town to be quiet and respect the calm atmosphere. Do not walk through the town in swimwear during prayer times.

It is actually a great time to surf because the lineup empties out a bit while the locals are away. Just grab lunch before noon.
