I heard shops charge massive fees for tiny scratches. How do we protect ourselves.

This is a very common frustrating scam. Shady rental shops will rent you a heavily repaired board and when you return it they claim you caused a small ding that was actually already there demanding exorbitant repair fees.

To completely avoid this stress only rent from highly reputable established surf schools like Safa Surf Camp or local shops with excellent recent Google reviews rather than random guys on the beach.

The absolute best defense is to relentlessly photograph and video the entire surfboard from every single angle including the fins before you leave the shop. Make sure the shop owner sees you documenting the existing damage.
