I seek the towns the guidebooks skip and Badulla in the Uva hills seems to be one the end of the famous hill country train line but rarely a destination itself Is it worth stopping what is there the Dunhinda Falls the Muthiyangana temple the town itself is it a good quieter base than touristy Ella and what is the Uva region around it like People who stopped in Badulla rather than rushing through please tell me what I would find

Hill country guide so the Badulla picture What it is Badulla is the provincial hub of Uva and the END of the scenic hill country railway (the famous Kandy Ella line terminates here) most tourists get off at Ella and never come the last stretch which is exactly why Badulla is overlooked and quieter it is a real working Sri Lankan town not a tourist resort which is its appeal for someone like you What is there DUNHINDA FALLS the star a powerful spectacular waterfall a short way out of town a thundering broad falls reached by a walk through the forest one of the finest falls in the country and far less touristy than the Ella sights the MUTHIYANGANA temple an ancient and sacred Buddhist temple in the town one of the sixteen holiest sites tradition links it to a visit by the Buddha a genuine living pilgrimage site the TOWN ITSELF a bustling authentic Uva market town ringed by hills the real hill country life without the tourist veneer and the train journey TO Badulla (the final Ella to Badulla leg) is gorgeous and almost empty A quieter base than Ella YES if you want the authentic over the touristy Badulla and the Uva countryside around it offer a real local hill town a great waterfall a sacred temple and a base for the surrounding tea country and the Uva landscapes without the Ella crowds and prices it suits the independent traveller seeking the real thing more than the Instagram circuit The Uva region around it lovely and underexplored tea estates quiet roads the Dunhinda and other falls the Namunukula range and a gentler less trodden hill country so worth stopping for the traveller who wants the overlooked authentic hill town YES Dunhinda Falls the Muthiyangana temple a real working town and a quieter Uva base ride the line to its end and find the hill country most tourists miss

The Ella to Badulla final train leg being gorgeous and almost empty is the tip the same scenery as the famous stretch without the crowds packing the doorways stay on past Ella and you get it to yourself
