Udawalawe National Park is universally considered the absolute best place to see wild elephants. The park has a massive, permanent elephant population, and sightings are practically guaranteed on any morning or afternoon safari.
You can also frequently see wild elephants simply standing on the side of the main roads near Buttala or the borders of Yala National Park, hoping tourists will toss them fruit from passing cars.
If you are traveling between July and September, Minneriya National Park is spectacular. During this dry season, hundreds of elephants gather around the central lake in an incredible phenomenon known as The Gathering.
