The absolute prime season for spotting blue whales and sperm whales off the coast of Kalpitiya is between February and April. During these specific months the ocean is remarkably calm making it perfect for spotting the massive blows on the horizon.

If you visit between November and December you might also see them but the ocean can occasionally be slightly rougher. From May to September the strong winds that bring the kite surfers make whale watching boat trips highly unpleasant and often impossible.
