Bird watching for a keen generalist the endemics the circuit and June conditions
Casual but serious birder Sri Lanka has many endemic species and I would love a realistic circuit to see a good share without it becoming a hardcore twitching expedition Where are the key habitats which endemics are gettable for a generalist do I need a specialist guide and is June a decent time given the monsoon or are the birds and the access compromised Birding guides especially welcome

Wet zone birding guide so the realistic generalist circuit The endemic prize the island has a few dozen endemic bird species and a keen generalist can reasonably see a strong share in a focused week without hardcore twitching The key habitats and what they give Sinharaja rainforest the crown jewel for endemics the mixed feeding flocks here deliver many wet zone specialities in a morning the Sri Lanka blue magpie the red faced malkoha the spurfowl the endemic babblers a guide inside Sinharaja is genuinely necessary the birds move in flocks and the guides know the calls and the flock timing Kitulgala lower rainforest similar species easier access the wet zone garden birds the hill country (Horton Plains Nuwara Eliya) for the highland endemics the whistling thrush the endemic white eye the dull blue flycatcher the dry zone parks (Bundala for water birds Yala Wilpattu) for the wider waterbird and raptor list and the cultural triangle tanks for the spectacular water bird congregations Do you need a guide for Sinharaja and the highland specialities yes a good bird guide multiplies your sightings enormously knows the territories and the calls and is affordable for the value the dry zone you can self drive with a safari but a birding focused driver helps June conditions honestly the southwest wet zone (Sinharaja Kitulgala) is in monsoon expect rain and leeches but the birds are RESIDENT and active mornings often clear enough and the rainforest birding is a wet business in any season the endemics do not migrate away the dry zone north and east are in their fine season now for waterbirds so a June circuit weights nicely toward Sinharaja mornings plus the dry zone tanks The generalist week shape Sinharaja two nights with a guide for the rainforest endemics the hill country for the highland set and a dry zone park for the waterbirds and raptors that mix gets a generalist a deeply satisfying list
Dawn is everything for the rainforest flocks be at the Sinharaja gate at opening the flock activity drops sharply after mid morning the early start is the whole day
The blue magpie in a Sinharaja feeding flock was a trip highlight even for a non birder the guide found in minutes what I would have missed entirely the guide point is real
Sinharaja with a guide for the flocks the hill country for the highland set a dry zone tank for the waterbirds this is the generalist circuit I hoped existed and the birds do not migrate away reassurance seals June thank you
