I usually book everything in advance online but Sri Lanka seems to run on family guesthouses and I wonder if I am doing it wrong Should I book the booking platforms ahead message guesthouses directly for a better rate or just turn up and find rooms How far ahead do I need to book in June is the guesthouse culture worth choosing over hotels and what is the etiquette of the family run stay I want to do this the smart and respectful way Hosts and travellers please advise

Guesthouse owner so the inside view on booking and the family stay culture The platforms versus direct reality the booking platforms are how most travellers find us and they are convenient for browsing and securing a first night or two BUT messaging the guesthouse DIRECTLY (the platform often shows a phone or the property has a page) frequently gets you a better rate because we save the platform commission and a warmer relationship many of us offer a discount for direct or for longer stays or throw in airport pickup or a free breakfast so book the platform to FIND us message direct to BOOK well How far ahead in June June is shoulder to low season in much of the country (the southwest wet the east in season) so OUTSIDE the east coast you have flexibility book the first couple of nights and the popular or limited places (a specific tea bungalow a sought after Galle Fort room the east coast in its season) ahead but leave room to be spontaneous you do not need everything locked turning up and finding rooms works fine in low season in most towns and lets you stay longer where you love it and flee where you do not Guesthouse versus hotel for most travellers the family guesthouse is the BETTER choice here not the budget compromise you get home cooked rice and curry (often the best meals of the trip) genuine local knowledge help with transport and trains and a warmth no hotel matches it is the heart of travel here choose the guesthouse The etiquette of the family stay treat it as being a guest in a home greet the family remove shoes where indicated (often), eat the breakfast they make, give notice for dinner so they can cook, be tidy and warm and they adopt you ask their advice on everything they love to help and a genuine thank you and a fair tip at the end for a family who has looked after you lands well The smart respectful approach platforms to discover direct message to book and build rapport guesthouses over hotels for the soul of it a light forward booking in low season and the openness to linger where the family and the place make you want to stay

The message direct for a better rate genuinely works I saved on three bookings and got free pickups just by messaging the host after finding them on the platform everyone wins except the commission

One low season caveat some places half close or the owner travels in the deep off season so a quick message to confirm they are actually open before turning up saves a wasted trip in the quietest months

The home cooked rice and curry at the guesthouse being the best meal of the trip is a recurring theme across the food threads here give notice for dinner and you eat better than any restaurant
