I am booking my first village homestay and want to be a respectful guest. What customs and manners should I follow to avoid accidentally offending my host family.

Always remove your shoes before entering the main living areas of the house even if not explicitly asked. Use your right hand when eating, giving, or receiving items as the left hand is considered unclean in traditional Sri Lankan culture. Dress modestly around the house especially around elders and avoid short shorts, revealing tops, or walking around in swimwear. Never touch anyone head including children as the head is considered sacred.

Accept food and drinks when offered even if you are not hungry as refusing can be considered rude. Finish everything on your plate to show appreciation for the meal. Compliment the cook directly as home cooking is a huge source of pride. Ask permission before photographing family members especially elderly ladies and never photograph anyone praying or during religious activities.
