I want to surf the beginner breaks in Weligama but absolutely hate the noise on the main beach road. Are there authentic, quiet homestays located near the traditional fishing villages.

Yes, you want to look at the Pelena area on the western side of Weligama Bay. It is a traditional fishing community set back from the noisy main highway. Many families here have built beautiful, quiet homestays in their lush gardens. You are still only a 5-minute walk from the beginner surf breaks, but you get to sleep in complete peace away from the late-night party bass.

The tuk tuk drivers in Pelena are also much more relaxed and will not overcharge you like the ones waiting directly outside the Marriott hotel.

Pelena is the best kept secret in Weligama. The food at the homestays there is incredible because the families literally catch the fish themselves that morning.

Just keep in mind that local communities wake up very early. You might hear the fishermen getting ready or morning prayers around 5:30 AM, but it is a beautiful cultural sound compared to club music.
