I heard the coral was damaged by bleaching. Is it still worth going for snorkeling or should I look for other spots on the south coast.

While the coral at Hikkaduwa has suffered from bleaching events, the fish life is still incredibly vibrant. You can see many colorful reef fish and even green sea turtles just a few meters from the shore. For better coral quality, you might want to try Jungle Beach near Rumassala or take a boat to Pigeon Island near Trincomalee on the east coast if you are visiting during the summer.
