Can tourists see cinnamon peeling on the Madu River boat safari?
2 Answers from travellers
Almost all Madu River boat tours include a stop at Cinnamon Island. You will see a demonstration of how the bark is expertly peeled by hand to create cinnamon quills. You can buy fresh cinnamon sticks and oil directly from the families living there. It is a very authentic local industry. The boat trip also usually stops at a small temple island and offers the famous fish massage in the river for a small extra fee.
Make sure to check the quality of the cinnamon oil if you buy it. Genuine Ceylon cinnamon has a pale tan color and a sweet aroma. Avoid oils that smell too harsh or look very dark as they might be mixed with cassia.
