While Kalpitiya is globally famous for its super pods of dolphins it is actually also a highly underrated brilliant spot for spotting Blue Whales and Sperm Whales.

During the calm season between February and April the deep ocean shelf just off the Kalpitiya peninsula drops off dramatically creating perfect feeding grounds for the massive whales.

Because it is far less commercialized than Mirissa your encounters there are often significantly more peaceful and intimate with far fewer tourist boats crowding the animals. The boats absolutely go out far enough.
