Yes photography of the ancient Sigiriya frescoes is absolutely strictly entirely banned. It is completely forbidden to take pictures or record videos of the paintings.

The site security guards stationed inside the cave monitor tourists relentlessly. If you pull out your phone or camera they will instantly shout at you and can legally confiscate your device and delete the photos.

This incredibly strict rule was implemented because decades of tourists using bright camera flashes caused severe irreversible fading to the delicate ancient pigments. You must simply enjoy the beautiful art with your own eyes.
