I need to catch the coastal train from Colombo Fort to Ahangama for a big weekend surf party at Kabalana. Will I be able to fit my shortboard on the packed Friday commuter train.

The Friday evening coastal trains the Ruhunu Kumari or Galu Kumari are extremely packed with locals heading south for the weekend. Getting a surfboard on board at Fort station requires you to be very early. Try to board at Maradana station where the train originates so you can secure a spot in the luggage guard van before the massive crowd at Fort.

A shortboard is usually fine if you keep it upright between your legs, but definitely do not try this with a 9 foot longboard. You will not even make it through the carriage door.

Make sure you sit on the right side of the train facing the direction of travel. The sunset over the ocean from Mount Lavinia all the way down to Galle is legendary.

If the train gets delayed in Galle, just jump out and grab a tuk tuk for the last 30 minutes to Ahangama so you do not miss the start of the Friday beach parties.
