For absolute beginners, Hiriketiya is visually less intimidating because it is a sheltered horseshoe bay. The inside section is pure sand and soft rolling whitewash. However, it gets extremely crowded with other beginners, making it like bumper cars. Ahangama (specifically Kabalana beach) is a much wider, open beach break. It handles crowds better and is excellent for learning, but the ocean feels bigger and rougher.

Weligama is actually the best beginner beach in the south. Huge sandy bay with very slow waves.

If you go to Hiriketiya, go out at 6 AM. By 9 AM it is too crowded to learn safely without hitting someone.
