Dambulla caves after Sigiriya - is it cash only, shoes off on boiling rock, and do they shut the ticket desk at 5

We will hit the caves around 3.30 on the way to Kandy. Google says 7 to 7. Friend said the foreigner counter is easy to miss and they only take rupees. How long is the climb. Socks? Can we do it in an hour before the Perahera traffic starts.

Buy at the foreigner ticket office, not a helper on the steps. Cash rupees. Cover shoulders and knees. Shoes off before the caves - the rock path cooks, socks are not fashion they are skin. An hour is tight if you want all five caves plus the view; 90 minutes is honest. If you arrive after 4.30, ask whether the counter is still selling before you climb.

We paid cash, stuffed shoes in a rack, tipped the attendant a small note, walked in socks. Caves are hotter than outside. No flash on the paintings.

Golden Temple and the giant Buddha at the bottom are a different, mostly free look. The UNESCO caves are the ticketed climb.

Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
