Land 10.40pm. Hotel is Negombo, 20 minutes. Quote this morning was 4,500-6,000 on PickMe math. Now the pre-book guy says festival week, rain, Friday, 18k. We are not even going to Kandy. Do I just walk out to the official taxi desk.

Perahera is in Kandy. It does not triple a CMB-Negombo hop. 18,000 LKR for that run is a story. Use the airport taxi counter or open PickMe / Uber when you have signal in arrivals. If you already paid a deposit to a WhatsApp driver, you can still walk to the counter and argue later. Tell him you will pay the meter-equivalent, not a festival fantasy.
PickMe at 11pm earlier this week CMB-Negombo was ordinary. Friday is busier, not Kandy-prices. If the app is surge-y, the official pre-paid booth is the ceiling, not a guy named Chaminda you met in a Facebook group.
I charge night rate, not Perahera rate, unless you want me to keep driving to Kandy at midnight - that is a different invoice.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
