Getting from Colombo to Kandy — train, bus, or taxi, and which is genuinely best?

I coordinate private transport between Colombo and Kandy regularly. Here is the complete honest guide.

Options and realistic travel times:

1. Intercity Express Train: Colombo Fort → Kandy, 2.5–3 hours. Six scheduled trains per day (6 AM through 7 PM). Air-conditioned 1st class available (reserved, LKR 800 one-way). 2nd class unreserved (LKR 190, often crowded). The route climbs through rubber plantations and paddy fields — scenic but not the dramatic tea-country scenery of Kandy–Ella. Reliable, comfortable if booked 1st class. Book via Sri Lanka Railways website or on the day at Colombo Fort station.

2. Intercity Express Bus (CTB or private): 2.5–3.5 hours depending on traffic. Departs Colombo Central Bus Stand (Pettah) approximately every 30 minutes. LKR 180–280 for private express. Air-conditioned private coaches available (book at the bus stand). Faster than you expect on the expressway section, slower through Kandy's approaches.

3. Private taxi/driver: 2–3 hours, LKR 6,000–9,000 one-way. PickMe app offers fixed fares (more reliable than negotiating). Best option if travelling with luggage, early/late hours, or wanting direct door-to-door.

Traffic consideration: The Kandy Road (A1) through Kadugannawa Pass is a known bottleneck. Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings have severe congestion. The expressway (E03) is faster but requires exiting at Meerigama and rejoining the A1 — some taxis use this route.

My recommendation: Train (1st class reserved) for the experience and reliability. Private taxi if arriving/departing odd hours or with significant luggage.
