Public bus fares in Sri Lanka are incredibly cheap. A standard red CTB bus from Colombo to Kandy costs roughly 400 to 500 Sri Lankan Rupees, which is less than two USD for a four hour journey.

Even if you take the private, air conditioned luxury mini buses for the same route, the ticket is usually only around 1000 to 1500 Rupees. You always pay the conductor directly in cash after the bus starts moving.
