We are doing a day trip to Delft Island to see the wild horses left by the Portuguese. How do we ensure we do not miss the last ferry back to Kurikadduwan.

The Navy operates the free passenger ferries (like the "Vada Tharagai"). The last reliable public ferry usually leaves Delft around 2:30 PM or 3:00 PM. You must arrive at the Delft jetty at least 45 minutes early, as locals pack the boats quickly. Hire a tuk-tuk driver right when you arrive in Delft and explicitly tell him you need to be back at the jetty by 2:00 PM.

The wild horses are mostly in the dry plains in the center of the island. Bring lots of water, there are very few shops out there.

If you miss the Navy ferry, you have to pay a private fisherman a huge fee to take you across in a small, rough dinghy. Not fun in the afternoon chop.
