Fire safety standards vary. Larger hotels and newer properties usually have smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and clear emergency exits. Smaller guesthouses may have more basic measures. It's always worth checking for smoke detectors in your room and noting the nearest exit when you arrive. In an emergency, staff are generally helpful. For peace of mind, choose well-reviewed places that mention safety features. Most properties are low-rise (2-4 stories), which makes evacuation easier than in tall buildings. Having a small flashlight or phone with a good torch function is useful in any accommodation in case of power issues.

Larger hotels usually have better fire safety measures. Smaller places vary. Note your nearest exit when you check in and keep a phone or small light handy.
